The Virtual Currency Regulation Review is an international publication describing the legal and regulatory status of virtual currencies (also called cryptocurrencies) and future legal developments in the area. The publication relates to a number of activities with respect to virtual currencies from a regulatory perspective, including trading, exchanging, mining and issuing of virtual currencies. Furthermore, certain aspects of virtual currencies are analysed from a private law perspective as well as a criminal law perspective.

Partner Niclas Rockborn, senior associate Rikard Sundstedt and associate Robin Entenza, all active within Gernandt and Danielsson’s specialist and financial services group, are authors of the chapter in the publication regarding Sweden. The updates included in this year’s edition include the recently adopted EU Regulation on a pilot regime for market infrastructures based on distributed ledger technology (DLT), questions regarding classification of virtual currencies as securities under Swedish law, and Swedish public authorities’ view of the environmental consequences of the so-called “proof of work”-based method of mining virtual currencies.
